5 Best Things to Do in Seattle this Summer

We all know that there are a million and one things to do in Seattle. It’s certainly hard to cut down your must-do list when you visit – after all, the list is probably pages and pages long! But if you manage to free-up some time to do just five things in Seattle this summer, here are our favourites…

1. Reach for the Sky

First of all, you have to survey your territory. A trip on the Seattle Great Wheel at the end of Pier 57 is a fabulous way to do this. Catch excellent city and water views from within a gondola on this 175-foot-tall waterfront Ferris wheel. Each ride takes about 15 minutes and includes three full revolutions of the wheel. If you have a little extra cash to flash about, opt for the VIP experience in cabin #42. This cabin features leather bucket seats, a stereo system and a glass bottom floor.

2. Hit the Water

Lake Union features seven nautical miles of shoreline that’s dotted with houseboat communities and restaurants. The Northwest Outdoor Center rents out kayaks by the hour. Some 20 different types of kayaks are available, along with expert instruction. You can also sign up for a magical Full Moon Paddle.

3. Ride a Duck

Yes, you read it correctly. Seattle’s ‘Ducks’ are actually vintage DUKW vehicles - amphibious landing crafts that were developed by the US Army during World War II. So hop on board and tour downtown Seattle by land and Lake Union by water. It’s certainly a unique way to see the city!

4. Food, Glorious Food

One of the oldest continuously-operated farmers’ markets in the US, Pike Place Market, presides over a nine-acre historic district in the heart of downtown Seattle. Go with an empty belly because the market features a mindboggling plethora of mouth-watering goodies. You’ll also find ethnic groceries, arts and crafts, gift stores, vintage clothing, antiques and collectibles.

5. Go Underground

Want to see the city in a whole new light? Then take The Underground Tour offers the 75-minute tour of the streets of the Pioneer Square neighborhood in the historic district. The tour takes you through the subterranean passages that once served as the main roadways and first-floor storefronts of old Seattle. The great fire of 1889 destroyed much of the original wooden city, but Seattle was rebuilt on top of the ruins.
